Guide to Memory Card Readers

A memory card reader plugs into your computer via a USB or Firewire port. When you put your camera's memory card into the reader you will see it appear as a drive on your computer (see below)

By clicking on the drives you can see the image files which can be copied onto your hard disk, burned onto a DVD or printed. This particualr card reader is a 7 in 1 which is why you can see more than one removable drive.

Using a card reader to upload your pictures to your computer has a number of advantages, including

  • Faster to upload the pictures
  • Doesn't tie up your camera
  • Doesn't waste your camera's batteries
  • You can write back on to your memory cards
