Memory Card Formats

There are several memory card formats currently available, these include:

Compact Flash
Secure Digital
Memory Stick
Smart Media
Multi Media Card (MMC)
xD Picture Card
Microdrive

With the exception of a few cameras most digital cameras will only support one format

The different formats offer similar image quality, though they vary in speed and capacity.

CompactFlash is currently the most popular among camera manufacturers and is also available in the largest size - up to 4 gigabytes!

With the recent advent of xD cards by Fuji and Olympus we think that the SmartMedia format will soon die out.

One thing to bear in mind is that if you have other devices that use memory cards such as a mobile phone, Digital Camcorder, MP3 player or PDA (personal digital assistant) you might want to stick with the same format.
