If you want to show off your photography both online
and off then you'll need a colour printer with some
degree of "photo-quality" printing. Personal
inkjet printers starting around £50 should produce
reasonable colour prints, especially if you invest in
glossy
photo paper. Some printers also have slots for SmartMedia
or CompactFlash cards which let you print without a
PC.
For those who want professional quality prints, you'll
want a dedicated photo printer which can be a dye-sublimation
printer or six colour inkjet printer. Dedicated photo
printers start around £150, but are unsuitable
for everyday printing because they produce poor quality
text and may not print as large as 8"x11".
You can also upload your images to an online photo
printer which can be cost effective and provide stunning
results.
Printing without a computer - PictBridge is a new standard
to connect your camera directly to a printer regardless
of the manufacturer of either the camera or the printer.
A direct printer is basically a printer into which you
can directly plug in your digital camera and print direct
without have to download to a computer or even to have
a computer.
In the past many printers have only worked with cameras
of the same manufacturer but now if you have a PictBridge
printer you can plug in any digital camera (that is
PictBridge compliant) in to the printer.
